Dark Data: Why What You Don’t Know Matters by David Hand via @kdnuggets

In his latest book, a leading statistician Dr David Hand explores how we can be blind to missing or unseen data and how, in our rush to be a data-driven society, we might be missing things that matter, leading to dangerous decisions that can sometimes have disastrous consequences.

This is amazing and joins so many dots I didn't know I had. I recommend the full book makes it onto your Amazon wish list or similar as we are almost at Christmas and it would make a great present!!

AI Can Do Great Things—if It Doesn't Burn the Planet by/via @wired

OpenAI created an algorithm that successfully manipulates the pieces of a Rubik’s Cube using a robotic hand. But this accomplishment cost more than research time and effort—one estimate says it may have consumed about 2.8 gigawatt-hours of electricity, roughly equal to the output of three nuclear power plants for an hour. The computing power required for AI breakthroughs increased 300,000-fold from 2012 to 2018, creating an environmental impact that needs to be considered.

Something that we often don't consider but really should if we are serious about saving the planet.

What is Dark Data? via @InfinitDatum

Dark data is the information organisations collect, process, and store during regular business activities, but generally fail to use for other purposes. Think about it — anyone has the ability to create and store information. Taking into consideration people in the digital era, anyone can create files and store their output in their respective computers.

Interesting.
