Data science is a core part of American Family Insurance’s digital transformation strategy. AmFam has more than ten million active policies and processes more than one million insurance claims per year. And the algorithms the data science team creates are key to enabling underwriters, claims adjusters, agents, and subject matter experts to spend less time on manual processes and low-level decision making and more time leveraging their experience to impact the business.

To create those algorithms, data scientists need high-quality, trusted data. In the past, data engineers have had to build data sets in an ad hoc manner that was unsustainable for meeting the demands being put on the data scientist. Now, AmFam is leveraging the Alation Data Catalog to enable the data science team to self-serve on curated data: reducing redundant requests, streamlining communication, making valuable knowledge on the data searchable to all data scientists, and reducing onboarding time.

In this latest Data Science Central webinar learn how AmFam is driving more productive data science on trusted, curated data with the Alation Data Catalog.

Speakers:
Sean Kappes, Data Science Engineer -- American Family Insurance
Raja Perumal, Data Architect -- Alation

Hosted by: Stephanie Glen, Editorial Director -- Data Science Central

There are many tools designed to make mapping easy for anyone who wants to explore, analyze, and communicate the spatial patterns in their data. In designing these tools, users experience both the benefits and limitations of systems that are designed to be easy to use and general-purpose, rather than the more complex systems that can be custom designed for any specific user's need.

In this latest Data Science Central webinar, Research Scientist Sarah Battersby will address some of the technical design and analytics challenges such as technical base map data, map projections, and distortion. She will also discuss the broader challenges of how people think about maps and how/why these maps will always be just a little bit—or maybe a lot—wrong. Attend and learn how to help people visualize and use spatial information more effectively.

SLIDESHOW: 8 Steps to Success With Self-Service Analytics by David Weldon via @infomgmt

Self-service analytics are growing in popularity because the benefits are many and they can be easily deployed by non-technical users. Consider the following checklist for an effective and comprehensive self-service analytics strategy.

I think slide 10 is crucial - without data integrity there really is no point with providing any analytics.
